5 Reasons to use Silverstripe as your next CMS
Recently I started a website project using Drupal 6 as the CMS but became quickly frustrated with many aspects of the system….and even though I'm familiar with Drupal things weren't going my way. SilverStripe had been in the back of my mind for some time, so I gave it a go. Having now nearly completed the project it was the best decision I could have made...
1. It's easy to get started
There are some simple tutorials to work through that help you get the basics nailed. Also it's in a workable state from the moment you install it on your server. Theres no need to add essential functionality like a wsiwyg editor. At the beginning they mention that you need a good understanding of PHP, Javascript, HTML and CSS, but I don't think that necessarily true if you were creating a simple website. Which brings me to my next point...
IE6 must DIE! - A business case to upgrade.
Update 10 Feb 2010 - Come 1st March 2010 Google will no longer be supporting IE6 as well a many other older versions of browsers. This means that if you are still using IE6 don't be surprised if the following common web tools do not work properly for you:
- Google Maps
- Google Search
- Any google website content
- Google Apps
Also Google own Youtube so don't be surprised if this is next to go...Any company still running IE6 1st of March only has themselves to blame. For a very long time web developers have been advising to upgrade. Microsoft themselves have been advising to upgrade. Users have been asking for an upgrade.
iPhone - nice but still pricey

I was realy supprised when Vodafone released their Apple iPhone here in NZ. They expected people to firstly pay $699 for the phone and then pay at least $80 a month for 24 months. It's good to see they have recently lowered the minimum monthly fee, in fact halved it to $40 per month for the 250MB plan. The phone still costs $699 however.

One of the reasons I like doing web development is because it doesn't matter how much you understand you can still be sure you are only grasping the tip of the ice burg. There is just so much to learn, and many ways to skin a cat.
